Summer heat is particularly challenging for those with adrenal insufficiency and thyroid disorders because these conditions impair the body's ability to handle the stress of the heat and regulate temperature. Adrenal insufficiency makes it harder to cope with physical stress like heat, leading to increased fatigue and weakness, while thyroid disorders can disrupt metabolism, causing issues with heat sensitivity and energy levels.
If you are approaching your forties like I am, or have played Super Mario Bros (which we called Mario 3), you may remember when the sun was trying to kill Mario. There was a strategy in avoiding the angry sun in Mario 3, as there are strategies for managing the heat with adrenal and thyroid diseases.
7 Heat Management Tips for Adrenal & Thyroid Disorders
- Hydration and Salt: It’s crucial to stay on top of your hydration as it helps keep your body cool and prevents dehydration, which can make symptoms worse. Adding salt to your water or taking electrolytes is important because it helps maintain the right balance of minerals in your body, which is essential for proper muscle function, nerve function, and overall energy levels. This can help you feel better and stay more comfortable in the heat.
- Cooling Techniques: To stay cool during the summer, wear lightweight clothing, use cooling towels, and take cool showers. Spend time in air-conditioned spaces, use fans, and stay in the shade during peak heat hours. Drink cold beverages, apply ice packs to pulse points, keep curtains closed to block out sunlight, and mist yourself with a spray bottle for a quick refresh.
- Rest and Pacing: Rest and pacing are crucial for managing adrenal insufficiency and thyroid disorders, especially during the summer heat. These conditions can drain your energy quickly, so it's important to take regular breaks and avoid overexertion. Plan activities during cooler parts of the day and listen to your body, giving yourself permission to rest when needed. By balancing activity with rest, you can help prevent fatigue, maintain your energy levels, and better cope with the challenges of the heat.
I have found that any temperature above 25 degrees Celsius is harder for me, so I go outside in the early morning and late evening.
- Nutrition: Nutrition plays a vital role in managing adrenal insufficiency and thyroid disorders, particularly in the summer heat. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains provides essential nutrients that support energy levels and overall health. Staying well-nourished helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and keeps your metabolism functioning properly. Incorporating small, frequent meals and hydrating foods can also help manage symptoms and prevent fatigue, ensuring your body has the resources it needs to handle the added stress of hot weather.
- Stress Reduction: High stress levels can exacerbate symptoms and deplete your energy, especially in the summer heat. Incorporating relaxation techniques like mindfulness, meditation, and gentle yoga into your daily routine can help calm your mind and body. By actively managing stress, you can improve your overall well-being, maintain better control over your symptoms, and enhance your ability to cope with the challenges of hot weather.
I plan “time-outs” during the day where I can just zone out in nature, without any distractions. A late evening campfire seems to do the trick.
- Medical Management: It’s important to stay on top of your follow-ups with your medical providers and take your medication at the same times everyday. Also, using checkpoints during the day like I do, helps manage your need for extra corticosteroids.
If I start feeling lethargic, when the area under my eyes starts to hurt and feel very heavy, these are my first signs that I’m low in cortisol and need more medication or that I’m dehydrated and need more salt and liquids. I add 2.5 mg or 5 mg to my next dose and that usually helps.
- Stay out of the heat: Even if I follow all of these tips, I have learned that in order to feel good and avoid symptoms, I need to simply stay out of the heat. I plan my day according to the temperature outside and available air conditioning.
With proper planning, it is possible to enjoy warmer weather.
I hope these tips will help you stay safe and healthy while enjoying the beautiful summer months!
