Beat the Heat: Hydration & Electrolytes Matter

Hot weather increases fluid and electrolyte loss through sweat. For people with primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease), maintaining fluid balance is especially important because aldosterone deficiency affects the body's ability to regulate sodium.

Summer Survival Tips

  • Drink regularly throughout the day and don't wait until you're thirsty.
  • Pay special attention to sodium intake during prolonged heat exposure, strenuous exercise, or heavy sweating (following your healthcare provider's recommendations).
  • Carry water and electrolyte-containing beverages when outdoors.
  • Watch for signs of dehydration:
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Unusual fatigue
    • Increased weakness
    • Nausea
    • Dark urine
  • Plan outdoor activities for cooler morning or evening hours.
  • Know your sick day rules and discuss heat-related stress dosing with your endocrinologist.
  • Always carry:
    • Emergency hydrocortisone injection kit
    • Medical ID
    • Extra medication
    • Emergency contact information

Travel Reminder

When travelling, it is important to:

  • Pack at least twice the medication you'll need.
  • Divide medications between carry-on bags.
  • Carry a physician's letter for injectable medications.
  • Research medical facilities at your destination.
