For the just 665 members of the Canadian Addison Society, coming together for support, education, and advocacy is critical–but not easy given the size of Canada. This year, in recognition of International Adrenal Insufficiency Day on April 7, Canadians impacted by adrenal insufficiency are invited to wear yellow in a unifying moment for Canadians living with Addison’s disease and other forms of adrenal insufficiency.
“We are inviting Canadians to show support, spark conversations, and help raise visibility for a rare condition that often goes unnoticed,” says Canadian Addison Society President Deborah Thomson. “This is a reminder that—even across a vast country—we are part of a connected, supportive community.”
The society is working to increase public understanding of adrenal disorders to encourage earlier recognition and diagnosis, celebrate the strength and resilience of those living with adrenal insufficiency, and provide education about this rare disease.
The society will be sharing photos, stories, and yellow-themed messages online to remind one another that no one faces adrenal insufficiency alone.
Addison’s disease and other forms of adrenal insufficiency occur when the adrenal glands fail to function. Adrenal glands produce life-sustaining hormones, including cortisol. Because symptoms can be vague and slow to develop, many individuals experience long, difficult diagnostic journeys. Without proper treatment, adrenal insufficiency can be life‑threatening. With appropriate hormone replacement therapy, education, and emergency preparedness, people can live full and active lives. However, awareness remains low, and misconceptions persist.
By wearing yellow, Canadians can help bring visibility to a condition that is often invisible and help to ensure that those living with adrenal insufficiency feel seen, supported, and connected.
